About the Site

The Alternative Star was started by Deborah Remus in April 2008, after the demise of Extra, a site hosted by the Winnipeg Free Press for high school students. The site's mission is to do show reviews and interviews with pop punk, hardcore and alternative bands visiting Winnipeg because no other publication bothers. As well, the site is here to serve as my portfolio and let me continue to write, something I really love doing.

Also I do the Canadian Music Round-Up for AbsolutePunk.net along with the odd music review. I post the feature each week on the home page.

Other Places You May Have Seen The Alternative Star

Perhaps the biggest honour is that other larger publications have read what I've written and decided it was good enough to publish or link to.

During my time with Extra, the Winnipeg Free Press decided to publish three of the CD reviews I wrote in the Saturday edition of the Free Press. While it was awesome I got paid for the Daggermouth review above, it was even more awesome to help promote these guys and give them much needed press. Sadly since Extra ended the Free Press has gone back to not bothering much with pop punk/hardcore and I think that's a real shame. See a scan here for proof!

So far, AbsolutePunk.net have linked to a bunch of the interviews you see on this site. The one I'm probably the most proud of is my All Time Low one here though, probably because Jason Tate posted it himself.

DJ Rossstar wrote an news article on Buzznet while giving a shout out to my Anti-Flag interview here.

Lastly, even Alternative Press has given my work recognition. One their site, they have a news section where they posted a news article using my Cute Is What We Aim For interview as a source. Click here to see what I mean.
