Thursday – Common Existence
Release Date: February 17, 2009 on Epitaph
Who?
If you are a part of the so called “scene” and still aren’t familiar with Thursday, you have to be living under a rock. This six piece post hardcore group is known for their influential involvement in the New Brunswick basement scene however they didn’t say there for long. Talent propelled them to the majors after the release of Full Collapse, putting them on stages much bigger than someone’s basement. However like many bands lately, Thursday have also gotten out of their major label contract and have joined forces with an indie to release their latest effort.
How is it?
Common Existence is dark and brooding, truly an excellent post hardcore record. Probably one of the standout tracks is “Last Call,” since it puts together everything the band does best. It starts off with rapid fire drumming and spacey guitars until the booming bass and heavy guitars kick in before vocalist Geoff Rickly starts to sing his poetic lyrics with his signature croon. “Time’s Arrow” on the other hand showcases the band’s softer side but they still don’t lose the dark, depressing tone that hangs over the whole album. It does take a few listens to sink in but at the end of the day, if you are looking for heavier, darker music that isn’t overly corny or generic, Thursday will prove to be a safe bet.
Final Verdict?3.5/5
