Album: Bayonets – Wishes & Wishes
It’s not very often us Canadians are introduced to music from across the pond that isn’t Coldplay but bands like Bayonets prove that Britain has an excellent, thriving music scene that we totally unaware of. Wishes & Wishes is eight tracks of catchy alt rock and the opening track “We Wish These Snakes Were Your Arms” starts the record off perfectly and is probably the best tune on the disc. A punchy drumbeat and jabbing electric guitars penetrate the song, which features muffled vocals which could perhaps very faintly remind you of a song off of Brand New’s debut Your Favorite Weapon. “Death Threats” slows things down a bit however, with eerie, atmospheric guitar lines and dual vocals, much less pop punk and something that sounds much more mature. The other tracks fall into either one of those categories, making the record anything but diverse and a little repetitive. It’s an interesting first effort and the musicianship is top notch but it doesn’t have what it takes to make you spin this record more than a few times.
Final Verdict? 3/5
